DVD Rental Kiosk: I Sold Out
This is my site Written by Shawn on February 10, 2009 – 9:03 pm

Yes, the title of the article is a dead give away. I did indeed leave the DVD Rental Kiosk business about 2 weeks ago. There are parts of the business that I already miss however the vast majority of the business is better in others hands.

As news of my sell hit the ears of friends and family the vast array of questions started pouring in. “Was the business loosing money”, “it was too much work, wasn’t it”, “the machines just would not hold up to all the abuse.” Those were just a few of the questions I was asked. The truth is, the business was making money … about 10,000 net last year and it really was not a lot of work. A few hours each week at the most. And while I cannot speak for other kiosks, I can tell you that DVDNow kiosks are pretty well built.

The reason I wanted out was because I was tired of associating my name with the filthly movies that are being produced today. You have seen them, you know the ones that have the Lord’s name in vain about 20 times in the first 5 minutes. The ones that have nudity and graphical sexual content. I am all for the shoot ‘em up and killing movies but come on … enough is enough on the sex and language.  Call me old fashion I guess, but I just do not want to be associated with that stuff.

I have heard the argument that people will not come out and financially support clean movies. My argument to them would be look at Nation Treasure, Indiana Jones,  and Star Wars. These are the movies that just popped in my head and I am sure there are countless more.

If you own a dvd rental business please do not think I am judging your moreal character. I am only speaking as to what is in my heart and my own personal convictions. If you do own a rental business I wish you continued success and if you are considering the business this is just one more thing I would suggest you consider before taking the plunge.

I will continue to write more articles referencing the DVD Rental Kiosks business as there are countless topics yet to be covered. Feel free to comment about ideas you have for future articles.

Thanks and God Bless.

  1. Hi Shawn,

I’ve been reading your posts, very informative. I really appreciate you commenting on content and expressing your being uncomfortable to having your name associated with content you don’t support. I had thought about the issue of content; and then forgotten, until I read your post. I think this is very important. One thing I don’t care for its going into a movie store and seeing some of the very graphic and sexually explicit displays. I feel like this just works to pollute our minds and isn’t good for our kids to see.

    Thank you for sharing.

  2. HI Shawn,

You wrote the business netted you 10K in income in over a year. Does that mean you paid off the 40k for 2 machine and all expenses associated with the business? From reading your earlier posts it sounds like the business started slowly with only an average of 5 rentals daily and you were able to increase that to 7 rentals a day. It sounds like you made out fairly good considering the slow start. What was your average daily rentals per a day towards the final months of your business. I’m thinking about taking the plunge and feel somewhat comfortable if the break even point is about an average of 7 rentals per day.

    Thank you for the insight,

    Alan

  3. Wow. I am proud to see you take a stand for a righteous cause over a profit… movie do impact our children and culture. I respect your choice to leave the DVD business.
