There are no longer any excuses for you not to be using a personal financial software program to help you track income and expenses allowing you to live within your means. Listed below (in no particular order) are the top 10 Free Personal Financial Software Programs available today.

In this post I am not going to personally evaluate each one. That will be for another day, one in which I have some time to tinker around intimately with each one. For now a list with the developers synopsis will have to suffice.

  • MyPhpMoney: MyPhpMoney is a tool written in PHP to manage bank accounts thru a web interface. It uses mysql to store data and relies on PHPLIB (template, session and database abstraction).
  • jGnash: jGnash is a free (no strings attached!) personal finance manager with many of the same features as commercially-available software. It was created in order to make tracking your personal finances easy, but also provides the functionality required by advanced users. jGnash is cross-platform and will run on any operating system that has a working Java 1.4.0 or greater Runtime Environment (e.g., Linux, OS X, and Microsoft Windows).
  • KMyMoney: KMyMoney is the Personal Finance Manager for KDE. It operates similar to MS-Money and Quicken, supports different account types, categorisation of expenses, QIF import/export, multiple currencies and initial online banking support.

With SimpleD Budget, you can keep track of your expenses for each month by allocating your income into “categories” such as Mortgage, Entertainment, etc., and as you spend money throughout the month, you enter the amount into a category. SimpleD Budget will let you see how much you have left in each category, or see how fast you are spending. It supports multiple languages(Unicode) and multiple currencies.
  • Buddi: Buddi is a personal finance and budgeting program, aimed at those who have little or no financial background. In making this software, I have attempted to make things as simple as possible, while still retaining enough functions to satisfy most home users.
  • Money Manger Ex: Money Manager Ex© is a free, open-source, cross-platform, easy-to-use personal finance software. It primarily helps organize one’s finances and keeps track of where, when and how the money goes. It is also a great tool to get a bird’s eye view of your financial worth. Some are obviously better than others however I have only operated a few of them so as of yet I can’t discuss the ups and downs of each. Which is your favorite out of the programs that you have used?

I have personally used JGnash, GnuCash, Money Manager Ex, and Mint. Of these I am most familiar with Money Manager Ex. I have used it at work and home and have a client using it. I am very satisfied with it. If I can drop some of the fright I have about entering banking data online I would give Mint a “Real” try. The features of Mint come real close to that of MS Money or Quicken.

Open source software is becoming more and more popular so it is good to see some financial programs becoming available for small business.
